Fairfield 61, William & Mary 45

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -- Freshman Anthony Johnson scored 16 points as Fairfield took a 61-45 victory over William & Mary on Saturday.

The Stags (12-17) received 13 points and five rebounds from freshman Greg Nero and 12 points from Jonathan Han in the victory, their ninth win in 11 games.

The game snapped a three-game winning streak for the Tribe (15-12). Adam Payton led William & Mary with 16 points, and Peter Stein added 10 points.

Fairfield took a 21-13 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half. The Tribe closed within 32-25 on Danny Sumner's jumper with 11:26 remaining, but the Stags got their lead back to 11 points over the next two minutes.

Saturday's game was just the second meeting between the schools, and the first since the 1973-74 season.

The Stags shot 42 percent from the floor, committing only seven turnovers. The Tribe shot 41.9 percent from the floor, committing 16 turnovers.

William & Mary's last lead of the game was 4-2 in the opening minutes. Fairfield closed the half with a 13-5 run to seize control.
