Hofstra 65, Holy Cross 64

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Carlos Rivera made two free throws with 1.7 seconds left and finished with 19 points to help Hofstra beat Holy Cross 65-64 on Saturday.

Alex Vander Baan's tip-in with 1:35 remaining had given the Crusaders (20-8) a 64-63 lead. Holy Cross had won 13 of its previous 14 games.

The Crusaders' Eric Meister was fouled by Rivera with 18 seconds left, but missed both free throws. Rivera was then fouled by Torey Thomas. Following the winning foul shots, Holy Cross guard Keith Simmons missed a jumper with a second to play in the bracket-buster game.

Antoine Agudio added 19 points for Hofstra (20-8), which led 37-32 at halftime. Loren Stokes added 16 points.

Simmons scored 22 points for the Crusaders, who had won the schools' four previous meetings, the last on Feb. 25, 1981.

Arminas Urbutis hit a 10-foot jumper to give the Pride a 56-48 advantage with 8:50 to go.

Holy Cross then went on an 11-3 run behind Thomas' five points to tie it 59-59 with 3:39 left.

Pat Doherty's three-point with 2:54 remaining gave Holy Cross a 62-61 edge, but Agudio's jumper put the Pride on top 63-62 at 2:32.
