ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Phillip Williams scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Winthrop clinched the Big South Conference regular season title with a 72-60 win over High Point on Tuesday night.
The Eagles (24-4, 13-0) outscored the Panthers by 23 points in the second half to earn their sixth conference title in coach Gregg Marshall's nine years.
Big South tournament games are held at the site of the higher seed, so Winthrop can host all the way through the title game on March 3. Despite the loss, High Point (20-9, 10-3) has secured second place in the league.
The Panthers finished the first half on an 18-4 run to lead 39-28 at the break. But Winthrop scored 14 of the first 16 points of the second half to take a 42-41 lead with 13:42 to go.
The teams stayed close for the next seven minutes before Chris Gaynor's layup with 5:35 left started a game-ending 13-4 run for the Eagles.
Arizona Reid led High Point with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Tim Burns added 15 points.
The Eagles can become the first Big South team to go undefeated in the conference with a win Saturday over Coastal Carolina.
