COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- D.J. Strawberry opened the second half with three straight baskets, sparking a 16-2 run that carried resurgent Maryland to its fourth straight victory, 73-55 over Florida State on Wednesday night.
Bambale Osby scored 15 points, Mike Jones had 14 and James Gist 13 for the Terrapins. Strawberry, who failed to score in the first half, finished with 10.The victory enabled Maryland (21-7, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) to climb over .500 in league play for the first time this season.Al Thornton had 23 points and 15 rebounds for Florida State (17-11, 5-9). The Seminoles have lost five in a row following a three-game winning streak that included a 96-79 victory at home over Maryland.After picking up two fouls and playing only eight minutes in the first half, Strawberry returned from the break to make two layups and a dunk to put Maryland up 37-31. Osby and Jones added layups and Ekene Ibekwe capped the 12-point run with a dunk off a pass from freshman Greivis Vasquez.Florida State, meanwhile, opened the half by missing its first 11 field goal tries. After Isaiah Swann sank two foul shots to bring the Seminoles to 43-33, Ibekwe made a layup and Strawberry added a short jumper for a 14-point cushion.FSU cut the gap to nine points with 9:23 left, but could get no closer.The Seminoles shot 34 percent from the floor and missed 11 free throws in falling to 1-6 on the road in the ACC.Thornton had 16 points -- more than half the Seminoles' total -- and nine rebounds in the first half.The Terrapins missed 12 straight field-goal tries and were held scoreless for more than eight minutes while Florida State turned a 29-21 deficit into a 31-29 lead. Thornton scored eight points in the 10-0 run despite missing both free throws following a technical foul on Maryland coach Gary Williams.Before going cold, the Terrapins had 10 baskets and 10 assists, including five by freshman guard Eric Hayes.Maryland starters Ibekwe, Strawberry and Jones each had two fouls and totaled only 23 minutes before halftime.
