ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Brett James scored 16 points to lead five Elon players scoring in double digits Thursday as the Phoenix defeated Western Carolina 74-65.
LeVonn Jordan scored 13 points,
Scott Grable and
Ola Atoyebi added 11 points each and
Chris Chalko chipped in 10 for Elon (7-21, 5-12 Southern Conference). Atoyebi grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Elon, which led 36-35 at the break, dished out a season-high 19 assists and held Western Carolina to 38.5 percent shooting.
Nick Aldridge led Western Carolina (10-19, 7-11) with 15 points, while
Negus McKenna added 14 and
Eric Wilson scored 10.
The game featured four ties and eight lead changes until the Phoenix moved ahead for good at 40-39 with 15:33 left on an inside move by Grable, followed by seven unanswered Elon points.
Elon went ahead 45-39 at 14:32 on a bucket by Atoyebi.
Western Carolina, playing in its regular-season finale, scored 17 second-chance points compared to Elon's 3 points.
