LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- Dominic McGuire and Eddie Miller each scored 15 points as Fresno State ended New Mexico State's 19-game home winning streak Saturday night with a 60-58 victory in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Aggies (21-7, 10-4) had one last shot to win it when Justin Hawkins recovered from fumbling the ball away and put up a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that rimmed out.Tyrone Nelson had a double-double for the Aggies with 16 points and 11 rebounds.The Bulldogs (20-8, 8-6) led from the start but fell behind 52-51 when New Mexico State's Tyrone Nelson scored a one-handed jump shot from the baseline with 3:11 to play.But the Bulldogs regained the lead within two minutes when Quinton Hosley hit four free throws to make it 55-52.New Mexico State's cause wasn't helped when Hatila Passos -- shooting 59 percent from the line this season -- missed the front end of a 1-and-1. He followed that by missing three of his next four free throws -- the final one coming with 40 seconds to play.It was 55-53 in favor of Fresno State at that point.The Bulldogs held on by hitting their free throws. Hosley and McGuire combined to hit 9 of 10 in the final three minutes of play.The Aggies fell behind thanks to a slow start that saw them hitting on two of their first 10 shot attempts. They fell behind by as many as 10 with under five minutes left in the first half.The Aggies shot 39 percent from the field in the half and 46 percent for the game.
