HAMMOND, La. (AP) -- Kennan Jones scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half, including a clutch 3-pointer with 18.3 seconds left as Northwestern State rallied from a 13-point deficit Saturday to beat Southeastern Louisiana, 71-65.
Jermaine Spencer had 17 points, including 10 in the second half, as the Demons (14-13, 9-5 Southland) moved into sole possession of first-place in the SLC East Division with two games left. Southeastern (16-11, 8-6) was led by 17 points from Daryl Cohen.Southeastern led 35-26 at halftime and 48-36 with 16:26 left. But the Demons got the next 11 points, cutting the lead to 48-47 on a jumper by Trey Gilder with 12:25 left. Southeastern answered with a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-point shot by Cohen with to make the score 55-49 at the 9:04.Jones, who finished 5-for-8 from the floor with two 3-pointers, tied the game at 57-57 with a 3-pointer with 7:09 left, then hit a jumper at the 6:19 mark to give the Demons their first lead of the game.The teams traded leads before Spencer's 15-foot jumper with 3:59 left put Northwestern State up for good, 65-64. Jones hit a jumper in the lane that gave the Demons a 68-64 advantage and made the final shot of the game: a 3-pointer from the top of the key.Terry Bryant had 15 points for the Lions and Patrick Sullivan 10.
