ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Dion Harris scored 24 points, including 10 straight for Michigan during a pivotal first-half run, to lead the Wolverines to a 67-56 win over Michigan State on Tuesday night.
Michigan (20-10, 8-7 Big Ten) kept its hopes alive for making the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998 with its fourth win in six games. The Wolverines play No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday at home in the regular-season finale before next week's Big Ten tournament.The Spartans (21-9, 8-7) had won four straight, including a victory over then-No. 1 Wisconsin to improve their chances of making the NCAAs for the 10th straight year.Michigan State freshman Raymar Morgan scored 13, Goran Suton had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Drew Neitzel added 11 points -- seven below his average. Neitzel did not start and seemed to be limited because of flu-like symptoms and upper-respiratory problems.The Wolverines held Michigan State scoreless for the last 5:09.Courtney Sims had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines, who won consecutive games against Michigan State at home for the first time since 1997-98. The Spartans had won 14 of the last 16 games in the rivalry, including five of the previous seven in Ann Arbor.Harris' scoring burst in the first half put Michigan ahead for good, and he helped hold off the Spartans when they rallied.After Harris made two free throws to put the Wolverines ahead 41-31 early in the second half, Michigan State quickly pulled within one. The Wolverines built a nine-point lead midway through the half, then the Spartans made it 59-56 with five-plus minutes.Harris and the Wolverines wouldn't let Michigan State get closer, scoring the last eight points of the game.
