Marist 87, Canisius 63

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -- James Smith scored 15 points as Marist defeated Canisius 87-63 in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament Saturday.

The top-seeded Red Foxes (24-7) advanced to Sunday's semifinals against fourth-seeded Siena.

Jared Jordan scored 14 points and totaled 10 assists for Marist, and Ryan Stilphen added 13 points. The Red Foxes shot 50.7 percent from the field, winning their ninth straight game.

Eighth-seeded Canisius (12-19) received 18 points each from Corey Herring and Frank Turner. The Golden Griffins shot 41.7 percent from the field and committed 26 turnovers.

The Red Foxes established a 44-32 halftime lead, then put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half with a 21-5 run.

Will Whittington was the other Marist player in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Marist was 9 of 26, or 34.6 percent, from 3-point range while Canisius was 8 of 22, or 36.4 percent, from the same distance.
