HOUSTON (AP) -- Cedric Smith scored 17 of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 38 bench points in the Islanders' 80-72 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the first round of the Southland Conference men's tournament Thursday night.

After leading 45-31 at halftime, the top-seeded Islanders had to withstand a second-half challenge by the Lions, who began the second half with a 31-19 run to get within two points at 64-62.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got some key scores inside from senior post Chris Daniels and converted free throws to hold off the Lions, who lost their fourth straight game.

Kevin Menefee scored 14 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds. Josh Ervin added 12 points for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which won the league's regular season crown in its first season in the conference.

Southeastern Louisiana (16-14) was led by guard Daryl Cohen's 18 points. Forward Joseph Polite scored 13, and guard Terry Bryant finished with 12, although he was 3-of-15 from the floor.

Daniels, a 7-0 center who was named the league's Player of the Year Tuesday, was held to 10 points, all of them in the second half, and eight rebounds.

The Islanders won their fourth straight game despite committing 26 turnovers.
