MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- Pete Campbell scored 17 points, including 5-of-11 three-point shooting, to lead Butler over Ball State 61-45 in the season opener for both teams Friday.
Anthony Newell had 16 points in the Cardinals' (0-1) first game under new head coach Billy Taylor.
Peyton Stovall, who came into the game needing 21 points to break the 1,000-point mark for his career, had 13, pushing his current mark to 992.
He also grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and had three assists.
With the score tied at 2-2 early, the Bulldogs (1-0) went on a 7-0 run. The Cardinals scored just 17 points in the first period and trailed 31-17 at the half.
In the second half Ball State closed to within 39-31 before fouling Ball State guard Mike Green. Ball State closed to nine points at 42-33 with 11:13 on the clock, but Butler scored the next eight points and the Cardinals never again came close.
