HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -- New Marshall head coach Donnie Jones opened the 2007-08 regular season with a 60-49 victory over Pikeville, his alma mater, on Tuesday.

Markel Humphrey led Marshall (1-0) with a team-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting.

Tirrell Baines chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds, and Mark Dorris added 10 points.

William Harris and Jeff Ferguson were the only double-digit scorers for Pikeville (2-2) with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

After trailing by 11 at halftime, Pikeville pulled within two points to make it 44-42 following 3-point baskets by Anthony Ighodaro and Justin Hicks with 6:38 remaining in the contest.

Despite shooting 50 percent from the charity stripe (15-30), Marshall was able to hold off Pikeville by hitting 8-of-10 free-throw attempts in the final six minutes.

With a new up-tempo style of play, Marshall caused 23 Pikeville turnovers and had 13 steals.

Pikeville led 14-11 with 8:30 remaining in the first half, but Marshall put together a 16-2 run to lead 27-16 at the break. Humphrey had 13 of his 21 points in the first half.
