ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Manny Harris scored 19 points and Ron Coleman added 14 as Michigan hung on to defeat Eastern Washington 61-53 on Friday in the consolation round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
The Wolverines (3-2) failed to score a field goal in the last four minutes but made nine free of their 10 free throw attempts in the final 1:43 to prevail.Eastern Washington (1-5) was plagued by shooting problems in the first half. The Eagles got good looks at the basket from the perimeter in the early going but couldn't knock down 3-pointers, hitting just 1-for-8 in the first nine minutes.Michigan's shooters, meanwhile, caught fire. Ekpe Udoh broke a 12-12 tie with a short jumper with 10:05 remaining, and Harris, Kelvin Grady, Jerret Smith and Coleman followed with 3-pointers. Udoh hit another jumper at the end of the 16-1 run and the Wolverines led 28-13.Eastern Washington closed to 34-21 at the half behind six points by Brandon Moore off the bench.Michigan's Zack Gibson pushed the lead to 36-21 to open the second half but the Eagles finally found their shooting touch, hitting their first five 3-point attempts.A 16-7 run behind two 3-pointers each by Marcus Hinton and Milan Stanojevic closed the gap to 46-42 with 12:08 remaining.A 3-pointer by Trey Gross closed the gap to one, 54-53, with 1:30 remaining, but the Eagles could not score again.Smith hit a pair of free throws, Harris had four and Coleman one to close out the scoring.Kellen Williams led Eastern Washington with 13 points and seven rebounds.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
