HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Ricky Lucas scored 19 points and Stony Brook lost all but one point of a 22-point second-half lead before hanging on for a 77-74 victory over Hofstra on Wednesday night.

Lucas was 6-for-6 from the field and his fastbreak layup with 10 seconds left gave the Seawolves (3-7) a 76-73 lead. Hofstra (1-5) trailed by 22 points three times in the second half, the last at 48-26 with 13:33 to play.

Antoine Agudio, the nation's leading scorer at 27.6 points per game, had 24 for the Pride.

Stony Brook decided to foul Agudio near midcourt with 7.2 seconds left rather than give him a chance to tie the game with a 3.

He missed the first free throw and made the second to make it 76-74. Lucas was fouled with 5.9 seconds left and made one, but Charles Jenkins' 3-point attempt with one second left bounced off the rim and Hofstra had its fourth consecutive loss.

It was the second straight game Hofstra rallied from more than 20 points down in the second half to get within one, only to fall short. The Pride trailed by 21 with 17 minutes left against Fordham last week, got within one with 7:40 left and lost 73-71.

Mitchell Beauford added 15 points for Stony Brook, which has won three of four, while Nick Carter had 14.

The Seawolves played without senior center Emanuel Neto, their leading rebounder at 7.9 per game, who returned to Angola for the funeral of his mother, who died last week after a long illness.

Freshman Nathaniel Lester added 20 points for Hofstra, which took advantage of poor free throw shooting by Stony Brook to get the deficit into single digits. The Seawolves missed six straight free throws over a 2-minute span in which the Pride went on a 12-2 run to pull to 66-63 with 1:53 to play.

The Seawolves took a 33-17 halftime lead by shooting 52 percent (13-for-25) while Hofstra shot 20 percent (5-for-25) and committed 15 of its 18 turnovers.

Stony Brook had lost the last three meetings with the Pride, all by double digits. Hofstra leads the series between the Long Island schools 17-4.
