Washington 84, Portland St. 65

SEATTLE (AP) -- Ryan Appleby's 3-point shooting and Jon Brockman's huge second half were just enough for Washington.

Appleby tied a school record with seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points, and Brockman had 14 of his 24 in the second half as Washington pulled away late from Portland State for an 84-65 win on Tuesday night.

The Huskies (6-4) rebounded from a sluggish offensive performance last Saturday against Portland to shoot 62 percent and tie a season high with 11 3-pointers. Appleby's 3-point production matched the school mark held by Senque Carey and Deon Luton.

Brockman made 11 of 13 shots and grabbed 12 rebounds, as the Huskies outrebounded the Vikings 34-14.

Washington could never shake the pesky Vikings, who lost for just the second time in their last six games -- the other loss a 72-60 setback at No. 7 Washington State. Mickey Polis led Portland State (7-5) with 16 points, but all those came in the first half as the reserve guard could not get an open look in his brief second half appearance.

Deonte Huff added 13 and Jeremiah Dominguez scored 11 for the Vikings.

The Huskies held a 43-37 halftime lead on the strength of three 3-pointers in the final minute of the first half, two of those by Appleby, including a pull-up 25-footer as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Washington then slowly built its lead, never letting the Vikings get closer than six points. The Huskies kept some breathing room thanks to Brockman, who scored 10 points in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half.

Joel Smith gave Washington a 12-point lead at 71-59 on a 3-pointer with 8:28 left and Portland State never got closer than 10 after that.

Tim Morris added 13 points and Quincy Pondexter scored 10 for Washington.

Polis and Appleby each put on a shooting display, as the two teams combined to make 31 of 49 shots in the first half -- a whopping 63 percent.

Appleby missed his first attempt, an 18-footer in the opening moments. Then he took a few steps back and knocked down five of six beyond the 3-point arc.

But Appleby's shooting couldn't match Polis' perfection -- going 5-for-5, while playing just eight minutes. Polis capped his perfect half with a deep 3 in front of the Washington bench, with the burly Brockman crashing into Polis for a four-point play, cause Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar to stomp his foot in frustration and chastise his team for giving Polis an open look.

The four-point play gave the Vikings a 33-32 lead, just their second lead of the half. But Washington scored 11 of the final 15 points of the half.
