ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) -- Derick Nelson had 18 points and Dan Waterstradt added 12 points and 12 rebounds as Oakland defeated neighboring Rochester College 67-53 Wednesday night.
The game was the first between the schools since 1998. The Golden Grizzlies (5-6) are 10-0 against Rochester (7-6), with the first nine wins coming when Oakland was in Division II. Rochester is a member of the USCAA.Keith Benson added 10 points and nine rebounds for Oakland, which outrebounded the Warriors 38-23.John Djurovski led Rochester with 18 points, hitting 6-of-9 3-pointers, and Tyler Leipprandt added 15. The Warriors hit 10 triples, but only nine 2-point shots.Oakland held the Warriors scoreless for more than seven minutes during a 16-0 first-half run that put them ahead 19-6. That margin grew to 21 before Rochester hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the half.The Golden Grizzlies led 39-26 at the half, thanks to a 24-8 edge on the glass. No Warrior had more than one rebound -- Waterstradt outrebounded Rochester 9-8 -- and only Djurovski's 5 3-pointers kept them in the game.The Warriors got within 62-51 with 2:32 to play, but Erik Kangas answered with a 3-pointer and Oakland held on for the win.
