CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Cavell Johnson had 19 points and 15 rebounds, reserve Matt Spadafora scored a career-high 18 points and undermanned Maryland-Baltimore County beat Hampton 83-65 on Saturday.
Ray Barbosa had 15 points and
Jay Greene added 11 points and 11 assists for the Retrievers (8-4), who are off to their best start in 22 Division I seasons. UMBC snapped a two-game losing streak.
Rashad West scored 20 points to lead Hampton (5-6), which lost its third straight.
Theo Smalling added 15 points.
After West's three-point play put the Pirates up 47-43 with 14:48 left in the game, UMBC responded with a 15-0 run without Greene, who had gone to the bench with three fouls.
Spadafora's right-side 3-pointer gave the Retrievers their first lead, 48-47, with 14:03 to go. He later added a transition layup for a five-point cushion.
The Retrievers -- minus reserves
Uwem Eshietedoho (broken leg) and
Justin Fry (sprained ankle) -- dressed only nine players. The bench was further taxed when
Darryl Proctor, who scored 15 points, fouled out with 2:13 remaining and Hampton behind by eight points.
The Pirates wasted an early 10-0 lead and didn't take advantage of UMBC's 8-for-28 start from the floor. Smalling scored 10 first-half points for Hampton, which led 34-32 at halftime.
