    LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- Fred Peete scored 20 points to lead New Mexico State to an 86-58 win over Alcorn State on Monday afternoon.

    Peete scored 11 points in the last three minutes of the first half to help the Aggies (6-9) take a 50-27 halftime lead. Peete was 7-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

    Justin Hawkins had 16 points and Jonathan Gibson added 13 for the Aggies, who had five players score in double figures. Freshman Jahmar Young, making his first start, scored 12.

    New Mexico State opened the second half with a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach.

    Alcorn State (1-12) started strong, penetrating the Aggies' zone defense with driving layups and dunks. At the 10-minute mark, the Braves and Aggies were tied at 18.

    The Aggies' pressure defense wore down the Braves, who turned over the ball 15 times in the half. The Aggies scored 20 points off of Alcorn State's turnovers.

    Alcorn State also had 15 fouls in the first-half compared to NMSU's five, allowing the Aggies an 11-1 advantage from the free throw line. For the game, the Aggies outshot the Braves 51 to 41 percent.

    Alex Owumi led the Braves with 17 points. Troy Jackson had 11 and James Kendrick added 7.
