AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Jiri Hubalek scored 13 points and Bryan Petersen hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start a decisive second-half run that carried Iowa State to a 72-48 victory over South Carolina Upstate on Wednesday night.
Iowa State had runs of 11-0, 17-3 and then a final 16-4 burst to finish off Upstate (2-12), which rallied after trailing by 20 a little more than 15 minutes into the game.
Behind 32-12, Upstate went on a 13-0 run spanning halftime to draw to 32-25 in the opening minute of the second half. The Spartans trailed 35-28 after Bobby Davis' free throw but got no closer.
Petersen, who has been more of a passer than a shooter, hit a 3 from the left of the key, nailed another from the right wing less than a minute later and his teammates took it from there. Corey Johnson and Wesley Johnson combined for the next 10 Iowa State points to stretch the lead to 51-32.
The Cyclones led by as many as 27 down the stretch. Iowa State shot 57 percent and had just four second-half turnovers after committing 13 in the first half.
Brackins scored three straight baskets, the last one on a nice lob from Hubalek, to finish an 11-0 run that gave Iowa State an 11-3 lead. The 6-foot-10 freshman had two more buckets during a 17-3 spurt that made it 32-12 with 4:48 left in the half.
At that point, Iowa State was shooting 67 percent, Upstate had 11 turnovers to only four baskets and the game looked to be a total mismatch.
But the Cyclones didn't score the rest of the half and the Spartans started their big run, scoring more points in a span of 4:23 than they did in the game's first 16 minutes.
