RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Kevin Anderson's tip-in with 28.3 seconds remaining gave Richmond a 50-48 lead and the Spiders hung on to defeat Virginia Tech 52-49 Thursday.

Richmond (7-6) started slowly in both halves. In the first half, they didn't score for the first 7:11 before Jarhon Giddings hit a 3-pointer. However, Richmond scored the final 14 points of the half to take a 25-21 lead at the break. Kevin Smith began and ended the spurt with a pair of dunks, and Justin Harper scored eight points.

In the second half, Richmond went without a field goal for the first 7:58. A 14-2 run later in the half gave the Spiders a 43-35 lead with 7:05 remaining. After Richmond stretched the lead to nine, the Hokies forced a 48-all tie with 1:43 remaining on two free throws by Jeff Allen.

After Anderson's tip-in, Deron Washington hit the first of two free throws before David Gonzalvez hit a pair of free throws for Richmond with 6.2 seconds left to play. Malcolm Delaney missed a 3-pointer for the Hokies with 1 second left.
