NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Jerome Dyson tied his career high with 27 points and Connecticut decided to play defense after giving up 48 first-half points in a 98-86 victory over Seton Hall on Thursday night.
A.J. Price added 16 points and Hasheem Thabeet had 15 as the Huskies (10-2) won their fifth straight game in the Big East Conference opener for both schools. Jeff Adrien scored 13 and Stanley Robinson 11 to help Connecticut beat Seton Hall (9-4) for the seventh straight time and the 21st time in 23 games.The Huskies shot 51 percent for the game, hitting 29 of 57 attempts. They also outrebounded Seton Hall 46-40 with Thabeet getting a game-high 11.Freshman guard Jeremy Hazell had a career-high 28 points to lead the Pirates. Larry Davis added 13 points off the bench on a night the Huskies handled Seton Hall's top two scorers.Brian Laing, who was averaging 20.5 points, had eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. Eugene Harvey picked up two early fouls and was limited to 11, six below his average.After a wild up and down first half that saw the teams combine for 95 points, Connecticut took control of the game with its interior defense and an early 14-2 spurt that was led by Dyson. The sophomore guard scored eight points in the run that he capped with a three-point play and a 3-point shot, the latter giving the Huskies a 67-56 lead with 15:09 to play.Connecticut hit 34 of 47 free throw attempts. Seton Hall was called for 31 fouls compared to 13 against Connecticut.
