NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Jerome Dyson tied his career high with 27 points and Connecticut decided to play defense after giving up 48 first-half points in a 98-86 victory over Seton Hall on Thursday night.

A.J. Price added 16 points and Hasheem Thabeet had 15 as the Huskies (10-2) won their fifth straight game in the Big East Conference opener for both schools. Jeff Adrien scored 13 and Stanley Robinson 11 to help Connecticut beat Seton Hall (9-4) for the seventh straight time and the 21st time in 23 games.

The Huskies shot 51 percent for the game, hitting 29 of 57 attempts. They also outrebounded Seton Hall 46-40 with Thabeet getting a game-high 11.

Freshman guard Jeremy Hazell had a career-high 28 points to lead the Pirates. Larry Davis added 13 points off the bench on a night the Huskies handled Seton Hall's top two scorers.

Brian Laing, who was averaging 20.5 points, had eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. Eugene Harvey picked up two early fouls and was limited to 11, six below his average.

After a wild up and down first half that saw the teams combine for 95 points, Connecticut took control of the game with its interior defense and an early 14-2 spurt that was led by Dyson. The sophomore guard scored eight points in the run that he capped with a three-point play and a 3-point shot, the latter giving the Huskies a 67-56 lead with 15:09 to play.

Connecticut hit 34 of 47 free throw attempts. Seton Hall was called for 31 fouls compared to 13 against Connecticut.
