BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Jeff Allen hit a free throw with 12.4 seconds to play Saturday and Virginia Tech rallied to beat Maryland 67-66 in its ACC home opener.

The Hokies (10-6, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed almost throughout. They rallied five times in the second half to get even, but not until Allen made the first of two free throws did they move ahead, and Maryland got only one more shot.

Greivis Vasquez, who missed his first 11 shots and then hit two down the stretch, got off a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but the ball hit the back of the rim and the clock ran down before anyone regained possession for Maryland (10-7, 0-2).

Vasquez finished 2-for-14 from the field.

Allen led the Hokies with 17 points and nine rebounds and A.D. Vassallo scored 16. Malcolm Delaney added 13 for the Hokies, including a 3-pointer with 51.4 seconds left.

James Gist led Maryland with 16 points and Bambale Osby had 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute. Adrian Bowie added 12 and Vasquez had 10.

Vasquez gave Maryland a 61-59 lead with 3:14 to play with his first basket. After Vassallo's dunk tied it again, Gist had a tip-in and Vasquez followed with a spinning bank to give the Terrapins a 65-61 advantage. A free throw by Osby made it 66-61.

Hank Thorns started the Tech comeback with a baseline jumper and Delaney's 3-pointer from the key tied it with 51.4 seconds left, whipping the crowd into a frenzy.

Deron Washington then knocked the ball away from Gist and Allen was fouled under the basket. He made the first to give Tech the lead, but missed the second. The Terps were awarded possession after a scrum for the loose ball, setting up the last shot.

The Terps missed nine of their first 10 shots and had seven turnovers in the first eight minutes, but trailed only 15-5 when they discontinued their sloppy play.

Landon Milbourne had a three-point play and 3-pointer as Maryland scored 13 points in a row to go up 18-15. The Hokies missed eight shots in a row during the run and trailed for most of the rest of the half as the Terps closed it on a 28-12 run.
