NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Tony Murphy hit six crucial free throws down the stretch and finished with 21 points as Norfolk State defeated Coppin State 65-60 Saturday night.
The Spartans (5-8, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) broke open a close game with a 13-2 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 33-23 lead at the break.
Norfolk State continued to pour it on early in the second half, stretching the lead to 49-28 on Murphy's 3-pointer with 13:31 left. But the Eagles (3-12, 0-2) rallied, cutting the margin to 57-56 on Tywain McKee's 3-pointer with 3:12 remaining.
Murphy sank six consecutive foul shots over the next 2:26 to build the lead to 63-56 with 21 seconds left, and the Eagles could get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Murphy was only 4-of-15 from the field but was perfect on 10 free-throw attempts.
Corey Lyons added 12 points and Michael DeLoach scored 10 for the Spartans.
McKee led Coppin State with 19 points and Antwan Harrison scored 17.
