WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite shooting only 25 percent in the second half, American got 22 points from Garrison Carr and held on to beat Colgate 65-57 on Saturday.
Colgate cut into a 49-34 deficit early in the second half with an 18-6 run. The Eagles (10-8, 2-1) went more than 13 minutes without a field goal, until Derrick Mercer's 3-pointer with a minute and a half remaining.
Kyle Roemer returned a 3 for Colgate (9-8, 1-2) with just under a minute to go to cut American's lead to 59-57, but the Eagles ended the game with six unanswered points to secure the win.
Mercer added 13 points for American, which cushioned a big lead early by hitting six straight 3-pointers in the first seven minutes of the game. Carr hit three of his game-high four 3s in the stretch.
Kendall Chones scored 17 points to lead Colgate, which is 0-8 all-time at American. Roemer, the Raiders' leading scorer, scored only nine points as he was held to single-digit scoring for the fourth time in the last seven games.
