SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Sam Burgess scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, including a tie-breaking 3-pointer with about 2:30 remaining and Brigham Young hung on to beat rival Utah 55-52 Saturday, winning on the Utes' home court for the second straight year.
Lee Cummard scored 19 points, sealing BYU's third straight win in the rivalry on two free throws with 3 seconds left to play.
The Cougars (13-5, 2-1 Mountain West) ended a three-game losing streak on the road despite going 20-for-60 from the floor and 3-for-17 from 3-point range.
Utah (10-6, 1-2) had two chances to regain the lead in the final 1:01 but missed on both and again on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Lawrence Borha led Utah with 12 points and
Luke Nevill had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Utes, who had rallied to set up a thrilling finish.
Burgess broke a 50-all tie on a 3-pointer with about 2:30 left to play, then
Tyler Kepkay hit a jumper from the top of the key to get the Utes within 53-52 with 1:30 left.
Luka Drca had a chance to put Utah back up, but missed the first free throw on a 1-and-1 with 1:01 remaining. BYU's
Ben Murdock missed on a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining and the Utes had another chance.
Utah called time out with 33 seconds remaining, but whatever play the Utes came up with unraveled. Kepkay tried to drive with the shot clock winding down and had to rush a shot, which hit nothing before landing in Cummard's hands.
Cummard was fouled and made both free throws, leaving Utah with only a slim chance of tying it. Kepkay got off a shot before the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim.
After trailing 26-23 at halftime, Utah opened the second half with a 7-1 run, getting a roar from the home fans when Green's 3-pointer put the Utes ahead 28-27. The lead went back and forth from there until BYU pulled away on an 11-3 run.
Utah slowly battled back and got within 50-46 on a hook shot by Nevill, then Drca hit a leaning jumper that got the home fans on their feet and followed that with a layup to tie it with about 3:30 left.
Both teams had some sloppy moments in the first half. Utah went scoreless for more than 5 minutes twice and BYU opened the game 1-for-10 from the floor.
