BYU 59, San Diego St. 56

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Trent Plaisted scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Brigham Young to a 59-56 win over San Diego State on Wednesday night.

Despite making only 3-of-8 free throws, Plaisted connected on one with 1:24 remaining in the game that was ultimately the game winner. Plaisted's free throw put the Cougars (14-5, 3-1) ahead 57-53.

Kyle Spain responded with a 3-pointer to pull the Aztecs (14-5, 4-1 Mountain West) back to within one with 1:07 left, but he missed two shots inside of 20 seconds that would have given SDSU the lead.

Sam Burgess hit two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to push the lead to three, but Ryan Amoroso's shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

The win extended BYU's home court winning streak to 41 games, which is the second longest active streak in the nation.

Both teams struggled from the field with the Aztecs hitting 37 percent and BYU only 34 percent.

Down 7-4 in the first half, San Diego State went on an 18-6 run to take a 22-13 lead with 8:33 remaining before halftime. Lorrenzo Wade scored eight of his 10 first half points during the run.

BYU fought back over the final minutes of the half with an 8-2 run to pull within one at 27-28 at the break. It was the first time the Cougars had trailed at halftime on their home court in over a year.

Wade led all scorers with 21 points and was joined in double figures with Spain's 15 and Billy White's 13.

Lee Cummard scored 12 while Jimmer Fredette scored 11 off the bench for the Cougars.
