Holy Cross 66, American U. 64

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Andrew Beinert caught a long rebound and hit a jumper just inside the 3-point line with 18.5 seconds left as Holy Cross avoided its worst Patriot League start in nine years with a 66-64 win over American on Saturday.

Tim Clifford led Holy Cross with 24 points despite playing the last eight minutes with four fouls. The Crusaders' Kyle Cruze and Greg McCarthy each added 10.

McCarthy tied the score at 50 when he completed a three-point play with nearly seven minutes remaining, then made a layup to put Holy Cross (10-8, 1-4) ahead for the first time since early in the first half.

The teams traded the lead 12 times after that through Beinart's jumper. Derrick Mercer's layup missed high off the glass with 2.9 seconds left. He tangled for the rebound with Cruze, who won the jump ball for Holy Cross.

Cruze grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for the Crusaders, who beat American 17-9 on the offensive glass.

Garrison Carr scored 17 points to lead American (11-9, 3-2), which has lost eight in a row to Holy Cross dating to Feb. 20, 2004. Bryce Simon scored 14 and Brian Gilmore had 10.
