ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- K.J. Garland scored a season-high 26 points and North Carolina-Asheville remained perfect in Big South play by beating defending league champion Winthrop 71-56 on Saturday.
Vincent James had 15 points and Bryan Smithson added 14 for the Bulldogs (18-4, 7-0), who used a 20-1 second-half run to erase a 33-26 halftime deficit and earn their first regular-season victory against the Eagles in eight years.
Garland was 9-of-11 shooting for UNC Asheville and James scored 10 points during their decisive run, with his three-point play with 13:15 remaining stretching the lead to 46-34.
UNC Asheville, which shot 57 percent in the second half, holds a two-game lead in the league standings over Winthrop.
