JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -- Desmond Yates made 12 of his 14 shots from the field Monday night to lead Middle Tennessee to an 89-86 win over Arkansas State in overtime.
Yates, 2-of-3 from long distance and a perfect 2-for-2 from the foul line, finished with 28 points. He made the last field goal scored by the Blue Raiders (10-11, 7-4 Sun Belt Conference) in the overtime period, a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left that put Middle Tennessee ahead for good.The Blue Raiders were on top 39-36 at halftime, but couldn't build that lead to anything greater than 7 points after intermission. With 40 seconds left, a pair of free throws by Nigel Johnson put the visitors up by 4, 74-70, but most of that margin was quickly erased when Adrian Banks hit a 3-pointer 10 seconds later for ASU (9-13, 4-7).After another Johnson free throw gave MTSU a 2-point lead, 75-73, the Indians' Shawn Morgan sent the game into overtime with a layup with 21 seconds left. Morgan kept the tie intact by grabbing a defensive rebound with 10 seconds on the clock.In overtime, the teams were tied three more times until Yates' 3-pointer put MTSU on top. Kevin Kanaskie and Demetrius Green made three free throws for the Blue Raiders in the final 37 seconds, while Ryan Wedel scored on three free throws for ASU.Johnson finished with 22 points for MTSU, while Green added 12 and Theryn Hudson scored 11.Banks led the Indians with 27 points. Yima Chia-Kur scored 20, Wedel 15 and Morgan had 11 points.
