WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jamal Durham made two free throws with 2 seconds left to give Winston-Salem State a 58-57 win at Howard.
It was the first road win in more than a year for Winston-Salem State (9-14). The Rams had lost 14 straight on the road after beating Bethune-Cookman 56-48 on Jan. 27, 2007.Brian Fisher had a season-high 20 points for Winston-Salem State, which snapped a three-game losing streak.Curtis White had a season-high 18 points for Howard (5-20). The Bison have now lost five in a row and eight of their last nine.Howard had a 57-53 lead with 13 seconds to go. Winston-Salem State's Isiah Tucker made a 3-pointer from the right side with 5.3 seconds left on the clock, and Fisher stole the inbound pass.After a timeout, Durham received a pass under the basket and was fouled by Howard?s Adam Walker. Durham made both free throws to give Winston-Salem State its first lead of the second half.The Bison had the last shot, but Howard?s Randy Hampton missed an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer.Durham finished with 10 points. Eight of his points came in the last 1:30 of the game, including a 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line.Eugene Myatt scored 10 points for Howard.The Bison led 27-23 at halftime, and built the lead to 36-27 with 15 minutes left in the second half. Winston-Salem State countered with an 8-0 run right after Howard took the nine-point lead. The game stayed close the rest of the way, although Howard led until Durham?s final free throws.
