Travis Lewis had 13 points and Carlos Medlock added 10 for the Eagles (10-14, 6-6 Mid-American), who moved into second place in the MAC West Division, a half-game in front of Toledo. Eastern Michigan has won three of its past four games.
Eastern Michigan built a seven-point lead at the start of the second half. Central Michigan scored seven straight points to even the game at 41 with 12:52 remaining. There were eight lead changes and one tie before Axon's 15-footer put the Eagles on top for good, 51-49.
Eastern Michigan went on to build a nine-point lead with just over three minutes to play but Central Michigan rallied within 65-64 with 31 seconds remaining on Allen's layup. Medlock hit two free throws with 24 seconds to play to give the Eagles a three-point advantage. Robbie Harman's 3-point shot that would have tied the game bounced off the rim as time expired.
The Eagles had one of their best shooting games of the season, connecting on 61.1 percent of its field goal attempts. The Chippewas made only 34.4 percent.
