KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Joe Reitz scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, leading Western Michigan to a 70-52 Mid-American win over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night.
The win clinched at least a tie for the MAC West championship for the Broncos (15-10, 9-3), who have won nine straight at home and still have four conference games left to play. The victory was the 400th MAC win for Western.Reitz scored the Broncos' first 14 points, hitting his first five shots in the game's opening five minutes to send Western Michigan ahead 14-7. He hit 7-of-9 shots in the first half. Reitz also had a game-high nine rebounds.Carlos Medlock led Eastern Michigan (10-15, 6-7) with 11 points.David Kool added 15 points and three assists for Western Michigan, which has won five of its last six games.The Broncos hit more than half their shots (22-of-41), and converted 20 free throws, compared to five for Eastern Michigan. The Eagles made 32.3 percent of their shots (20-of-62) and scored just one basket in the first 4:50 of the second half, when Western pushed its lead to 17 points, 42-25.Eastern Michigan coach Charles E. Ramsey was whistled for a technical foul with 18:10 left after forward Justin Dobbins was called for his fourth foul.
