RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Eric Maynor scored 10 points in a span of 2:27 late in the game that allowed Virginia Commonwealth to break open a defensive struggle and beat Towson 57-46 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

The top-seeded Rams (24-6), winners of five straight, will play William & Mary in Sunday's semifinals. The ninth-seeded Tigers finished at 13-18.

The Tigers cut a 12-point second-half deficit to 38-34 on Tony Durant's layup with 6:33 to play before Maynor, who led VCU with 19 points, hit a pair of field goals and four free throws in an 11-2 run that gave the Rams a 49-36 lead with 4:06 to play.

The Tigers got no closer than seven thereafter.

Freshman Larry Sanders had career highs of 14 points and 15 rebounds and added four blocks for the Rams. Jamal Shuler added 10 points despite shooting just 2-for-13.

Josh Thornton led Towson with 13 points and Durant had 12 and a career-best 15 rebounds, but the Tigers shot under 30 percent overall and missed 10 of 16 free throws.

VCU finished 4-for-23 on 3-pointers, and the teams combined to miss 18 consecutive shots during one stretch of the first half, which ended with the Rams ahead 25-22.
