BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Andrew Hayles and Roland Fitch had 14 points apiece to lead Alabama State to an easy 67-49 win over Texas Southern Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
The Hornets (20-9) will face the winner of Thursday's game between Jackson State and Southern in the semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
The Tigers (7-25) scored first less than a minute into the game on a 3-pointer by David Burrell and led twice in the first five minutes of the game. Then Alabama State took the lead on a Hayles 3-pointer and never let Texas Southern take the lead again.
Alabama State led 36-24 going into the intermission and never let Texas Southern get closer than 10 points in the second half. The Hornets led by 25 with 3:05 left to play before the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to whittle the lead down to the final 18-point margin.
