PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Matt Janning scored 24 points on 10-14 shooting and Keno Davis was denied a win in his Providence debut as Northeastern beat the Friars 70-66 on Saturday night.
Eugene Spates added 17 points for Northeastern (2-1), who handed Providence (0-1) its first season-opening loss since 1999.
Poor shooting plagued Providence early as Northeastern erased an 8-point deficit to take a one-point lead into halftime. Janning came out firing in the second half with seven points in under five minutes to put his team up 11 points midway through the half.
Providence stormed back to tie the game with just over two minutes remaining on Brian Mackenzie's three straight 3-pointers, but clutch Huskies shooting down the stretch ultimately did the Friars in.
