HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Dayton broke a 13-year-old record for 3-point shooting futility on Friday against Auburn -- and the Flyers still won.

In a 60-59 overtime win in the Chicago Invitational Challenge, Dayton went 0-for-24 on attempts from 3-point range. That broke the previous NCAA record of 0-for-22, set by Canisius against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 21, 1995.

But Marcus Johnson -- who missed a team-high five 3-point attempts himself -- scored eight of his team-high 16 points in overtime as the Flyers prevailed.

"Our guys stuck with it and gutted it out," Dayton coach Brian Gregory said, according to the Dayton Daily News. "It wasn't pretty. But when you beat an SEC team on a neutral court, it's hard not to call that pretty."

Auburn did not distinguish itself from long range, either. The Tigers (3-2) went 7-for-31 on 3-pointers as the two teams combined to miss their first 29 3-point attempts.

"I've been around a long time, and I don't think I've seen an 0-for-24," Auburn coach Jeff Lebo said, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 guard, scored four points at the start of the overtime period for a 52-49 Dayton lead and the Flyers (5-0) never trailed again.

After driving one-handers by Chris Wright and London Warren gave Dayton a 56-52 lead with 31 seconds to play, Johnson protected the advantage by making four straight free throws to clinch the victory.

DeWayne Reed scored a game-high 22 points for Auburn, including a game-high four 3-point baskets in a game marked by poor shooting on both sides. Auburn shot only 34.5 percent (20-58) from the field -- but that was slightly better than Dayton's miserable 27.8 percent (20-72) field goal percentage. The Flyers also shot 46.2 percent from the free throw line (12-26).

Wright had 10 points for Dayton while Barber and Tay Waller scored 10 points each for Auburn.
