ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Sam Hinnant scored 19 points and East Carolina held on to defeat Winthrop 63-60 on Saturday night.
The Pirates (5-1) ended a four-game losing streak to Winthrop, which lost only its 19th home game in the past 11 years.
After Hinnant scored to put the Pirates ahead 59-57 with 3:37 left, Winthrop (1-5) made three of four free throws to take a one-point lead with 90 seconds on the clock.
Hinnant hit a baseline jumper, then Brock Young added a layup with 25 seconds left to restore the Pirates' lead.
The Eagles had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but couldn't find an open look.
Winthrop led by 10 points midway through the first half but held a 32-31 lead at halftime. East Carolina led by as many as six in the second half.
