WASHINGTON -- Garrison Carr scored five points in overtime to help American University beat Lehigh 76-66 on Saturday in the Patriot League opener for both teams.
Derrick Mercer led the Eagles (9-6, 1-0) with 15 points, while Brian Gilmore scored 14 and Carr had 12. American held off the Hawks after squandering a late 10-point lead and failing to make a field goal in the final 6:33 minutes of regulation.
Marquis Hall scored 14 points for Lehigh (10-5, 0-1) and hit two 3-pointers in a 14-4 run to end the second half -- the latter making the score 64-64 with 1:03 to play.
Carr and Gilmore both missed 3-pointer's before the buzzer, but Jordan Nichols converted a three-point play off Carr's inbound pass to give the Eagles a 67-64 lead early in overtime.
Zahir Carrington added 19 points for Lehigh, which lost at American for just the second time in seven games.
