DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Vincent Simpson scored 17 points, including six in the final 1:10 of the game, to carry Hampton past Bethune-Cookman 53-51 on Saturday.
The Pirates (7-7, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) trailed the Wildcats (7-8, 1-1) 44-35 with 5:50 to play, but outscored them 18-7 the rest of the way.
Alexander Starling and C.J. Reed scored 11 points each for Bethune-Cookman, which did not trail in the second half until Simpson hit a 3-pointer with 1 minute left.
That basket gave the winning Pirates a 50-48 lead.
Bethune-Cookman led 21-16 at halftime.
