DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Vincent Simpson scored 17 points, including six in the final 1:10 of the game, to carry Hampton past Bethune-Cookman 53-51 on Saturday.

The Pirates (7-7, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) trailed the Wildcats (7-8, 1-1) 44-35 with 5:50 to play, but outscored them 18-7 the rest of the way.

Christopher Tolson scored 11 points and Brandon Tunnell added 10 as the Pirates won for only the second time in their past six games.

Alexander Starling and C.J. Reed scored 11 points each for Bethune-Cookman, which did not trail in the second half until Simpson hit a 3-pointer with 1 minute left.

That basket gave the winning Pirates a 50-48 lead.

    Bethune-Cookman led 21-16 at halftime.
