American U. 69, Bucknell 55

WASHINGTON -- Derrick Mercer notched a career-high 12 assists and Garrison Carr scored 25 points to lead American to its fifth straight win, 69-55 over Bucknell on Wednesday night.

The Eagles (10-6, 2-0 Patriot League) held Bucknell (3-13, 0-2) to 28.8 percent shooting (19 of 66) and ran up a 40-24 halftime lead that proved a sufficient cushion.

Mercer registered 10 of his assists in the opening half as he dished inside to Brian Gilmore and Jordan Nichols, and the Eagles entered intermission by hitting five of their last six baskets from 3-point range. The Bison trailed by as many as 25 in the second half.

Justin Castleberry scored 10 points to lead Bucknell, which lost its seventh straight and matched its worst start since 1954-55.
