BOONE, N.C. -- Kellen Brand scored a career-high 31 points to lead Appalachian State to a 76-70 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday.
Brand shot 10-for-13 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Josh Hunter added 11 points for the Mountaineers (7-10, 4-5 Southern Conference), while
Isaac Butts grabbed 11 rebounds.
Harouna Mutombo's jumper with 1:29 remaining in the game cut the Mountaineers' lead to 70-69. But Brand, Hunter and
Donald Sims made two free-throws each in the final 1:08 to clinch the win.
Mutombo scored 16 points to lead the Catamounts (9-9, 4-4).
Brandon Giles chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Mountaineers.
The Catamounts have now lost four of their last five games.
