LEXINGTON, Va. -- Chavis Holmes scored 27 points and Travis Holmes had 20 points to become the highest scoring twin brothers in NCAA Division I history in Virginia Military Institute's 92-85 win over High Point on Saturday.
The Holmes brothers have combined for 3,262 points, passing former VMI players Damon and Ramon Williams -- who finished with 3,252 career points in 1990. Travis Holmes also had 11 rebounds.
Keith Gabriel added 20 points and
Austin Kenon had 15 for the Keydets (16-3, 8-1 Big South Conference), who have won 15 of their last 17 games. It is VMI's best run since winning 16 of 18 in 1978.
The Keydets, who held a 16-point lead early in the second half, took an 84-69 lead with 5 minutes left in the game on Gabriel's 3-pointer. Gabriel made 5 of his 19 attempts from beyond the arc for VMI, which shot 15 of 50 from the 3-point line (30 percent).
A layup by
Nick Barbour, who led High Point with 25 points, cut the Keydets' lead to 86-79 with 1:41 left. But the Panthers (5-14, 1-8) would came no closer than five points.
Cruz Daniels scored 21 points for High Point.
