FARGO, N.D. -- Mike Nelson and Brett Winkelman combined for 13 straight points during a key run late in the second half to carry North Dakota State to its first victory over Oakland University, 81-71 Thursday in the Summit League.
The Bison (15-5, 9-1) scored 13 straight points to pull away from a 64-all tie with 5:38 left. Nelson, who finished with 21 points, had eight points and Winkelman five during the game-clinching run. Oakland (13-10, 6-4) had won the first four meetings between the teams.NDSU has won seven straight games.Ben Woodside scored 16 points and Lucas Moormann 14 for the conference-leading Bison.Will Hudson led the Golden Grizzlies with 18 points. Johnathon Jones chipped in 17 and Keith Benson and Erik Kangas had 13 each. Benson also grabbed 10 rebounds.Kangas tied the game at 64 with 6:35 left, but Oakland went 4:18 without a point as the Bison pulled away.
