FARGO, N.D. -- Mike Nelson and Brett Winkelman combined for 13 straight points during a key run late in the second half to carry North Dakota State to its first victory over Oakland University, 81-71 Thursday in the Summit League.
The Bison (15-5, 9-1) scored 13 straight points to pull away from a 64-all tie with 5:38 left. Nelson, who finished with 21 points, had eight points and Winkelman five during the game-clinching run. Oakland (13-10, 6-4) had won the first four meetings between the teams.
NDSU has won seven straight games.
Kangas tied the game at 64 with 6:35 left, but Oakland went 4:18 without a point as the Bison pulled away.
