ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Chavis Holmes scored 26 points, and combined with brother Travis to spark Virginia Military in the final minutes of overtime, helping the Keydets to a 110-106 win over Winthrop.
After Chavis Holmes hit five free throws in the final 34 seconds of regulation to help VMI (18-4, 9-2 Big South Conference) get to overtime, he and his sibling kept the Keydets ahead in the extra frame.
With the game tied at 99-all, Chavis' layup put VMI ahead before
Cameron Stanley -- who scored six of Winthrop's nine overtime points -- knotted it back up with two free throws.
A jumper and a layup by
Travis Holmes put VMI ahead 107-106 with 1:24 to go, and his pair of free throws with 14 seconds left sealed the win.
Michael Sparks scored 23 points and Travis Holmes finished with 21 for VMI.
Andre Jones led Winthrop (6-16, 5-7) with 24 points, while Stanley had 21.
