The Delta Devils (3-21, 3-8), who have lost four straight, were 22-for-69 from the field, compared to the Hornets' 29-for-52.
Alabama State bolted to a 10-0 lead in the first 5:56, but Mississippi Valley State scored 13 unanswered points. The Hornets closed out the half with a 16-5 run to lead 36-26.
The Delta Devils cut the deficit to 41-35 with 16:39 left, but were held scoreless for more than three minutes and the Hornets regained a double-digit lead.
