SAN FRANCISCO -- Kwame Vaughn hit a free throw with 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime as San Francisco broke a three-year losing streak against Bay Area rival Santa Clara by pulling out a 67-66 victory Saturday night.

Vaughn finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the Dons (10-17, 2-10 West Coast Conference), who had lost seven straight games to the Broncos, a stretch dating to Jan. 28, 2006.

Dior Lowhorn added 13 points and nine boards for a depleted USF squad that only suited up eight players in the wake of four suspensions handed down by coach Rex Walters earlier this month.

Kevin Foster paced Santa Clara (14-15, 6-6) with 20 points, including seven in an overtime period where the Broncos held a 66-61 lead with less than 2 minutes to go but allowed USF to score the game's final six points.

John Bryant tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds for his 23rd double-double on the season.

Michael Santos had a chance to ice the game in regulation for the Broncos, who had won seven of eight overall, but he missed a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds left that gave the Dons new life.

Santa Clara burst ahead late in the first half thanks to a 10-1 run that included eight consecutive points from freshman Marc Trasolini, who finished with 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting.

Trasolini looked like he had put Santa Clara in the clear when he hit a putback bucket with 1:52 to go in regulation for a five-point advantage -- a lead built in part on the strength of two free throws given after Walters was called for a technical foul.

Angelo Caloiaro hit a trey from the left corner to cut USF's deficit to two points with 1:34 left, and Vaughn knocked down a pair of foul shots at the 30.3-second mark to tie the score at 66-all.

Santa Clara held for a final shot, but Perry Petty's 3-point attempt from the left wing was off the mark, and immediately after Vaughn collected the rebound, Santos was whistled for the foul that determined the outcome.

Vaughn missed the first free throw short but swished the second, and Santa Clara could not create a miracle with a last-ditch, length-of-the-court pass.
