Santa Clara 67, Portland 65

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- John Bryant, playing in his final home game as a Bronco, scored 22 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, lifting Santa Clara to a 67-65 victory in overtime over Portland on Saturday.

Bryant had his 14th consecutive double-double and 24th of the season, No. 1 in the nation, for Santa Clara (15-16, 7-7 WCC). He recorded his fifth game of at least 20 points and 20 rebounds, also the most in the nation.

T.J. Campbell led Portland (18-11, 9-5) with 15 points, while Nik Raivio had 11.

James Rahon scored 16 points for the Broncos, and Marc Trasolini added 12.

Bryant set a Santa Clara single-season rebounding record with 430, surpassing Dennis Awtrey's total of 409 in the 1969-70 season. He leads the nation in total rebounds and entered the game averaging 13.6 rebounds per game, second in the nation.

The loss ended Portland's hopes of grabbing the No. 2 seed for the upcoming WCC Tournament. The Pilots will enter as the No. 3 seed and receive one bye instead of the two that go to the top-two seeds, Gonzaga and St. Mary's.

Santa Clara clinched the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye with its win and San Diego's 58-47 loss to Gonzaga later on Saturday.

Santa Clara dominated Portland in the free throw battle, making 26 of 30 to the Pilots' 12 of 23.

Bryant had 17 points and 17 rebounds during regulation, hitting all nine of his free throws. He added 5 points and 4 rebounds in overtime.

Bryant put the Broncos ahead 63-61 with 57 seconds left in overtime, taking a pass from Rahon and scoring inside.

After a Portland turnover, Rahon made two free throws, but Raivio countered with a jumper, cutting Santa Clara's lead to 65-63 with 25.1 seconds left.

Rahon made one of two free throws, pushing the Broncos' lead to 66-63. Then Michael Santos blocked Raivio's long 3-point shot. Bryant grabbed the rebound, was fouled with 4.8 seconds left and made one of two free throws, giving the Broncos a 67-63 lead.

Raivio made one of two free throws with 58.8 seconds left in regulation, tying the score at 55-55. Raivio had a chance to put Portland ahead but missed a 3-pointer.

Santa Clara's Kevin Foster missed from long range, and Rahon missed a 15-footer just before the buzzer.

Portland entered the game ranked No. 3 in the nation in 3-point shooting at 41.5 percent. But the Pilots made just 2 of 13 from long range in the second half and overtime.

After building a 28-24 halftime lead, Portland opened the second half with a 17-9 run, pushing its advantage to 45-33.

Campbell and Jared Stohl each hit 3-pointers during the spurt, and backup center John Hegarty had a three-point play and five points.

But with 12:45 left in the game, Campbell picked up his fourth foul and came out. With Campbell on the bench, Santa Clara went on a 13-2 run and cut Portland's lead to 47-46.

Moments later, Campbell returned. But Foster nailed a 3-point shot, putting Santa Clara ahead 49-47 and giving the Broncos their first lead of the game at the 7:30 mark.
