SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Villanova (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) went from its worst game handling the ball to its best, then used its defense to shut down Notre Dame to turn a close game into a blowout.With the Fighting Irish up by four points, the Wildcats took control with runs of 10-2 and 16-1 in the second half to win 77-60 on Monday night and keep alive their hopes of getting a double bye in the first round of the Big East tournament."That was the best defensive game we played all year," Villanova coach Jay Wright said.
• Notre Dame was outscored 45-28 in the second half and lost for the 10th time in its last 14 games. The loss assured Notre Dame of a losing record in the Big East.
• Scottie Reynolds led Villanova with 23 points, knocking down 6-of-7 3-pointers in the process. Reynolds also added six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
• Ryan Ayers made 7-of-10 3-pointers and scored 25 points, but the rest of the Irish made only 1-of-12 3-pointers and tallied 35 points.
