KINGSTON, R.I. -- Chris Lowe scored on a layup with sixth-tenths of a second left to lift Massachusetts to a 72-71 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday.
UMass held a 41-37 lead at halftime. Rhode Island, which was led by Jimmy Baron's 22 points, regained the lead at 71-70 with 6.5 seconds remaining on Marquis Jones' two free throws. Lowe followed by pushing the ball up court and driving to the basket for the game winner.
Rhode Island (22-9, 11-5) did not make a shot out of 12 attempts from beyond the 3-point line in the first half, finishing 4-for-19 in the game. Lamonte Ulmer and Delroy James each scored 12 points for the Rams.
UMass led by as many as six points with 6:35 left in the second half.
