RENO, Nev. -- Dwight O'Neil hit a go-ahead jumper with 21.7 seconds left and Fresno State held on to beat Hawaii 62-58 Tuesday night in the first game of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Sylvester Seay scored 16 points and O'Neil had 14 to lead the ninth-seeded Bulldogs (13-20), who advanced to play No. 1 seed Utah State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Roderick Flemings scored 18 points and Kareem Nitoto added 15 for the eighth-seeded Rainbow Warriors (13-17), who led by as many as 11 points in the second half before faltering.

A three-point play by Flemings with 11:23 left in the game gave Hawaii a 49-38 lead. But the Bulldogs started chipping away.

The 15-footer by O'Neil put the Bulldogs ahead 58-57, their first lead since midway through the first half.

Mychal Ladd, who had 13 points for the Bulldogs, hit a pair of free throws with 10.5 seconds left and Brandon Sperling hit one more foul shot with 2.7 seconds left to seal the victory.

    Hawaii led 28-23 at halftime.
